今週のPickUPチャンク解説の復習
ここでは日々のESE和訳＆解説記事の中でPick UPしたチャンクをまとめて復習します。
今週の英語構文復習メモに記載した構文以外にも、日常会話等でそのまま使えるチャンク等もたくさん紹介していますので、ぜひ復習してみて下さい。

月曜日のPickUPチャンク
“They’ll keep you from slipping on the ice.”
“keep ＋ O ＋ from ＋ -ing”は「Oが〜するのを防ぐ・OをXしないようにする」という意味の重要構文です。“prevent ＋ O ＋ from ＋ -ing” とほぼ同義ですが、”keep” の方が口語的です。”stop ＋ O ＋ from ＋ -ing” も同じ意味で使えます。“from ＋ -ing”の “from” は「〜から遠ざける・〜を遮る」という方向性を示します。“keep myself from -ing”（自分が〜しないようにする）という形もあり、“I couldn’t keep myself from laughing.” のように使います。
日常会話での応用表現
– This new system will keep unauthorized users from accessing our data.
– A quick review at this stage will keep us from making costly mistakes later.
– These gloves will keep your hands from getting too cold during the tour.
– Travel insurance will keep you from worrying about unexpected medical costs abroad.
月曜日のPickUP長文読解
“Light is made from many colors. When light goes into pure ice, only the color blue can go through. That’s why the whole cave looks blue.”

火曜日のPickUPチャンク
“We will protect our world, so promise me that you will protect yours.”
“promise ＋ O ＋ that ＋ S ＋ V”は「Oに〜することを約束する」という構文です。“I promise you that I will do my best.” のようにビジネスでも使える重要表現です。“yours”は “your world” の “world” を省略した所有代名詞で、名詞の繰り返しを避けるために使われます。“We will … so promise me …”は「こちらがすること＋だから＋してほしいこと」という交換・対等の約束の構造です。“promise me to V” は文法的に許容されない場合があるため、”promise me that ＋ S ＋ V” という形を使う方が確実です。
日常会話例
– We will handle the overseas side, so promise me that you will manage yours on schedule.
– Our team will take care of the design, so promise me that yours will finish the data by Friday.
– I’ll keep an eye on the luggage, so promise me that you will stay close to me.
– We’ll check in every two hours, so promise me that you will answer your phone.
火曜日のPickUP長文読解
“Listen closely, Taiga. You are an ESEnger now. That will never change, even if you are outside the TV. We will always be a part of you no matter where you are.”

水曜日のPickUPチャンク
“Chiri not only translated the Ainu tales but she also wrote a lot about the everyday lives of the Ainu people.”
“not only ～ but also …”は「〜だけでなく…も」という意味で、二つの情報を対等に並べながら後者をより重要・驚くべき内容として強調する構文です。主語を繰り返す場合（”Chiri not only … but she also …”）は “also” が “she” の後に来ますが、主語が共通の場合（”She not only translated … but also wrote …”）は “not only” と “but also” の後にそれぞれ動詞が続きます。“also” の位置に注意が必要で、“but also she wrote” は不自然です。A と B は文法的に同じ品詞・形を揃える（並列関係を保つ）ことが重要です。
日常会話への応用
– She not only managed the overseas project but she also trained the local team from scratch.
– This system not only processes data faster but also generates detailed reports automatically.
– The hotel not only had an amazing view but also offered a free cooking class every morning.
– Our guide not only spoke three languages but also knew every hidden restaurant in the city.
