今週のPickUPチャンク解説の復習

ここでは日々のESE和訳＆解説記事の中でPick UPしたチャンクをまとめて復習します。
今週の英語構文復習メモに記載した構文以外にも、日常会話等でそのまま使えるチャンク等もたくさん紹介していますので、ぜひ復習してみて下さい。

月曜日のPickUPチャンク

“It’s so close to perfect that some people say aliens built them.”

“so ～ that …”は「とても〜なので（その結果）…だ」という因果関係を表す重要構文です。“so” の後に形容詞・副詞が来て、”that” 以下にその結果が続きます。“close to ＋名詞”は「〜に近い・〜に迫っている」という表現で、“close to perfect”（完璧に近い）、”close to impossible”（ほぼ不可能）のように幅広く応用できます。“too ～ to” との違いも重要で、”too ～ to” は否定的な結果のみに使いますが、”so ～ that …” はプラス・マイナス両方の結果に使えます。

日常会話での応用表現

– The report was so close to perfect that our client had no comments at all.

– The demo was so close to perfect that some people thought it was already the final product.

– The pasta was so close to perfect that we went back the next day.

– The view from our room was so close to perfect that some people asked if the photo was edited.

“In ancient Egypt, people believed the kings would become gods after they died. To prepare for this, they built these pyramids and filled them with things the kings needed for their next life.”

構成パーツ

people believed the kings would become gods	人々は王が神になると信じた	“believe ＋ that節”（that省略）	“would become” は過去から見た未来（時制の一致）
after they died	死んだ後に	時の副詞節	“after ＋ S ＋ V” で「〜した後」
To prepare for this	その準備として	目的を表す不定詞句	“prepare for ～” で「〜に備える・〜の準備をする」
filled them with things	それらを〜で満たした	“fill ＋ O ＋ with ～” 構文	「〜を…で満たす・詰め込む」という重要熟語

“I asked you on a date because I want to get to know you better.”

“ask someone on a date”は「〜をデートに誘う」という口語表現です。“get to know ＋ O”は単なる “know”（知っている状態）と異なり、「知るようになる過程」を表します。“I want to get to know you.”と言うと、相手への関心と誠意がより丁寧に伝わります。“get to ＋動詞原形”は「〜するようになる・〜できるようになる」という変化・到達を表し、“I got to understand him.”（彼のことが理解できるようになった）も同じパターンです。

日常会話例

– I’m reaching out because I want to get to know you better and build a strong partnership.

– I asked you to lunch because I want to get to know you better — your team and mine will be working closely together.

– Would you like to join us for dinner? I’d love to get to know you better.

– I asked if I could join your family dinner because I want to get to know you all better during my stay.

火曜日のPickUP長文読解

“I was so shy and couldn’t help people before. But helping people feels good. And it isn’t as hard as I thought.”

構成パーツの解説

パーツ	意味	機能	補足
I was so shy	私はとても恥ずかしがり屋だった	“so ＋形容詞” で程度を強調	“so” は “very” より主観的な強調。話し言葉でよく使われる
and couldn’t help people	そして人を助けられなかった	結果の並列（and で接続）	“so … that …” の変形として “and” で結果を続ける自然な口語表現
before	以前は	時を示す副詞	文末に置いて「以前・かつては」という意味
helping people feels good	人を助けることは気持ちがいい	動名詞が主語の構文	“helping people” という動名詞句が主語。”it feels good to help people” と言い換え可
it isn’t as hard as I thought	思っていたほど難しくない	“not as ～ as …” 構文（否定の同等比較）	“as ～ as …” の否定形。”than I thought” でも同義

“I was a conductor of the Underground Railroad for eight years, and I never lost a passenger.”

“never ＋過去形”は「一度も〜しなかった」という強い全否定を表します。“I didn’t lose a passenger.” より “I never lost a passenger.” の方が格段に力強く、誇りと確信のニュアンスが込められています。“passenger”（乗客）はここで比喩的に使われており、タブマンが助けた逃亡者を指します。スピーチや実績を語る場面で使うと非常に効果的な表現です。“never” は文中の動詞の前に置くのが基本語順です。

日常会話への応用

– I have managed this account for eight years, and I never missed a deadline.

– I led the overseas team for five years, and I never lost a client.

– I’ve planned our family trips for ten years, and I never booked the wrong hotel.

– I’ve been packing for the whole family for years, and I never forgot a passport.

“Always remember, you have inside of you the strength, the patience, and the passion to change the world.”

構成パーツの解説

Always remember	いつも覚えておいてほしい	命令文による呼びかけ	“always” を加えることで「一時ではなく常に」という強調
you have inside of you	あなたの内側に〜がある	主語＋動詞＋場所の副詞句	通常は “you have the strength inside of you” だが倒置で強調
the strength, the patience, and the passion	力、忍耐、そして情熱	三つの名詞の並列（三分法）	“A, B, and C” の並列構造。”the” を各名詞に付けて一つ一つを際立たせる
to change the world	世界を変えるための	不定詞の形容詞的用法	“passion to change the world” で「世界を変えるための情熱」

“just ＋動詞原形”は命令文に “just” を加えることで「ただ〜するだけでいい・余計なことを考えずに〜しろ」というシンプルさと決断の強調が生まれます。“don’t have to ＋ V”（〜する必要はない）は“must not ＋ V”（〜してはいけない）と混同されがちな重要表現です。“You don’t have to come.”（来なくていい）は禁止ではなく、来ることは自由という意味です。“save lives”は緊急・医療・安全の文脈で特に重要な表現です。

日常会話への応用

– If the system goes down, just follow the emergency manual. You don’t have to think about it. It can save the project.

– If you know the facts, just present them clearly. You don’t have to overthink it. That can save the deal.

– If you have travel insurance, just call the emergency number. You don’t have to worry about the cost. It can save time.

– If you’re lost, just tap this button. You don’t have to do anything else. It can save us a lot of walking.

構成パーツの解説

パーツ	意味	機能	補足
But	しかし	逆接の接続詞	前の話題（具体的な対処法）から本質（心がまえ）へ転換
the most important thing	最も大切なこと	主語（最上級を使った強調）	“the most ＋形容詞” で最上級。”thing” を主語に立てる強調構文
is that〜	ということだ	補語節を導く接続詞	“the ＋名詞＋ is that ＋ S ＋ V” で「〜は…ということだ」という強調構文

金曜日のPickUPチャンク

“Like the wind that blows through the woods of Sonezaki, the story of Tokubei and Ohatsu spread far and wide.”

“like ＋名詞”は「〜のように」という直喩を表す表現です。“as ＋形容詞/副詞＋ as ～” と区別して覚えましょう。”like” は前置詞なので後ろに名詞が続きます。“spread far and wide”は「遠く広く広まる・あちこちに広がる」という意味の慣用表現です。“search far and wide”（あちこち探す）のようにも使えます。“spread” は自動詞としても他動詞としても使え、過去形・過去分詞も “spread” と同形です。“like” と “as” の使い分けは、”like” が前置詞で名詞の前、”as” が接続詞で節（S＋V）の前に使う点が重要です。

日常会話への応用

– Like the wind, news of our new product spread far and wide before the official launch.

– Like a spark, the best practice from our Singapore office spread far and wide across all branches.

– Like the wind, the photo I posted spread far and wide — I got hundreds of likes overnight.
