月曜日のPickUPチャンク
I’m surrounded by wavy red-brown walls.
“be surrounded by〜”は「〜に囲まれている」という意味の受け身表現。旅行先での感動の描写から職場環境まで幅広く使える。byの後には囲んでいるものの名詞・名詞句が来る。単に「周りに〜がある」と言うより、空間に包まれているような没入感・臨場感が出るのが特徴。”surrounded with”より“surrounded by”が一般的。
日常会話での応用表現
– Our new office is surrounded by nature — there’s a park right outside.
– Right now, I’m surrounded by data that needs to be sorted.
– Wow, I’m completely surrounded by mountains.
– I feel so at home here. I’m surrounded by great food and friendly people!

火曜日のPickUPチャンク
I can’t tell what she is thinking.
“can’t tell〜”は「〜が分からない・判断できない・見分けられない」という意味。「言えない」という文字通りの意味ではなく、「（見ても・考えても）判断がつかない」というニュアンスが重要。“I don’t know〜”より「情報を見たり感じたりしても読み取れない」という場面に特に合う。後ろにはwhat / if / whetherなどの名詞節が続くことが多い。
日常会話例
– I can’t tell if the client liked our proposal. Their response was pretty vague.
– I can’t tell what the manager is thinking about the new strategy.
– I can’t tell which way is north from here.Could you help me figure out the direction?
– I can’t tell the difference between these two dishes. Which one is spicier?

水曜日のPickUPチャンク
He always looked on the bright side.
“look on the bright side”は「物事の明るい面・ポジティブな側面を見る」「前向きに考える」という意味の慣用表現。”be positive”より「悪い状況の中にある良い点に意識的に目を向ける」という能動的なニュアンスが強い。“the bright side”には必ずtheがつく（× a bright side）。”look on the bright side of〜”と続けて特定の状況の明るい面を示すことも可能。
日常会話への応用
– I know the launch was delayed, but let’s look on the bright side — we now have more time to improve the product.
– I understand you’re disappointed, but try to look on the bright side. The feedback will make our next proposal much stronger.
– Let’s look on the bright side — now we get to explore a new restaurant we’ve never tried before!
– It’s raining harder than expected, but I’m trying to look on the bright side. It’s a great excuse to relax at the hotel and enjoy the spa.
