今週のPickUPチャンク解説の復習

ここでは日々のESE和訳＆解説記事の中でPick UPしたチャンクをまとめて復習します。

月曜日のPickUPチャンク

“This ash turned into soft rock. Then, the wind and rain slowly cut the rocks into the shapes we see today.”

“turn into ～”は「〜に変化する・〜に変わる」という意味の重要熟語です。“become” と似ていますが、”turn into” はより劇的・具体的な変化を表す場合に使われることが多いです。“cut ～ into …”は「〜を…の形に切る・削り出す」という表現で、“into” が変化の結果・到達点を示しています。“the shapes we see today” は “the shapes that we see today” の関係代名詞 “that” が省略された形です。“turn into” と “turn to” の違いとして、”turn into” は物理的・状態的な変化、”turn to” は「〜に頼る・〜の方を向く」という意味になることが多いです。

日常会話での応用表現

– A small idea from our overseas team turned into the product that customers love today.

– Years of data collection slowly turned into the analysis tool we use today.

– Watch how she cuts the clay into the shapes you see in the shop window.

for hundreds of years	何百年もの間	継続期間を示す前置詞句	“for ＋期間” で「〜の間（ずっと）」。”hundreds of” で「何百もの」

“Think of all the people you want to protect. And the belt will become super powerful!”

“think of ～”は「〜のことを思い浮かべる」という意味で、“think about”（じっくり〜について考える）との違いは瞬間的・感情的なニュアンスにあります。“命令文＋ and ＋ S ＋ will V”は「〜しなさい、そうすれば…になる」という構文で、“Study hard, and you will pass the exam.” のように日常でもビジネスでも頻繁に使われます。“become ＋形容詞”は「〜になる」という状態変化を表し、“get ＋形容詞” とほぼ同義ですが “become” はより書き言葉的な響きがあります。

日常会話例

– Think of all the clients you want to help. And your presentation will become truly powerful.

– Think of all the challenges they face every day, and your approach will become much more effective.

– Think of all the amazing things you want to see. And this long trip will become an adventure!

“a system that could send sound through a wire” の “that could” は関係代名詞節の中での “could” で、まだ実現していない段階での可能性を表しています。“through ＋名詞”は「〜を通じて・〜を経由して」という手段・経路を示す重要な前置詞句で、“through the Internet”（インターネットを通じて）のように物理的・抽象的いずれの経路にも使えます。“so ＋ S ＋ V”は因果関係を示す接続詞で、“because” が理由を導くのに対して “so” は結果・行動を導きます。“so that ＋ S ＋ V”（〜するために）と混同しないよう注意が必要です。

– We wanted to create a system that could send data through a secure cloud, so we began development two years ago.

“something that ＋ V”は「〜する何か・〜するもの」という意味で、“something” などの不定代名詞を関係代名詞節が後ろから修飾するパターンです。
“something”・”anything”・”nothing”・”everything” などの不定代名詞を修飾する関係代名詞は必ず “that” を使います（”which” は使えません）。“melt”は「溶ける・溶かす」という意味の動詞で、自動詞（”The ice melts.”）と他動詞（”something that melts your tooth”）の両方で使えます。「食べて→作る→溶かす」という三段階の因果の連鎖は、科学的な説明でよく使われる論理的な文構造です。

– We have developed something that automatically converts your data into easy-to-read reports.

“比較級＋ and ＋比較級”は「ますます〜・だんだん〜」という漸進的な変化を表す重要表現です。“louder and louder”（どんどん大きく）のほか、”bigger and bigger”（どんどん大きく）、”more and more interesting”（ますます面白く）のように使えます。二音節以上の形容詞は “more and more ＋形容詞” の形になります。“until ＋ S ＋ V”は「〜するまで」という意味で、ある状態の継続と到達点を示します。“sound like ＋名詞”は「〜のように聞こえる」という知覚動詞の表現で、“look like”・”feel like”・”smell like” と並ぶ重要表現群のひとつです。
